ELIA organizes the School for Language Service Providers Road Show for 2009
ELIA offers comprehensive, technical training by professionals for professionals

Rimini, Italy (17 February 2009) – The European Language Industry Association (ELIA) is pleased to announce the creation of the ELIA School for Language Service Providers (S4LSP). This series of full-day workshops will cover a range of topics, mainly technical in nature, important to companies in the language service industry and will take place in various locations throughout Europe each year.

The first two events in this series will take place in Aachen Germany, 20-21 April and Bologna Italy , 5-6 May with one workshop each day. Additional dates and locations will be announced in the coming months.

The two workshops that will be featured at each event for 2009 are:

1.       Translation Memories presented by Angelika Zerfass, Zaac. This workshop will give an overview of the tools used in localization, what their main functions are and how they might differ from each other.

2.       Integrating QA into your workflow presented by Juliet Macan, IcDoc. This workshop covers: “What is quality?”; the various factors involved; how/what tools can help improve results and reduce time and costs; and cover how to select the tools used to ensure that the maximum advantage is obtained.

Both presenters are true professionals with years of experience in their fields and are well respected in the language industry.

The S4LSPs have been created to better serve the needs of ELIA members. ELIA has built an excellent reputation for its well attended and favorably sponsored Networking Days (ND) featuring both training and networking programs for top management, CEOs and owners of member companies. The S4LSPs are designed to provide in-depth and practical training to the other critical part of the companies—project managers, vendor managers, reviewers, and the others employees that keep your company functioning and profitable. By staging the events in multiple sites around Europe , participating companies will be able to select the most convenient site or date to help reduce travel and accommodation costs or allow valuable employees to depart for training for a day or two without creating a crisis at work.

ND LISBON: Proven Networking and Training Program Comes to Portugal in October

The European Language Industry Association (ELIA) and the Globalization and Localization Association (GALA) will bring the associations’ joint Networking Days to Lisbon, 2 - 4 October.  Networking Days Lisbon is designed for decision makers from European language service companies.

“The real benefit of ELIA’s and GALA’s Networking Days is relationship building,” said Kim Harris, GALA board chair.  “The relaxed, intimate settings of the ND events have allowed me to build business connections that last and have developed into partnerships benefitting both parties.”

Participants in Networking Days Lisbon will learn from experts and peers about how to improve their company operations.  Registrants can choose from a variety of workshops and relationship building activities:

Structured Project Management Workshop for Localization Companies (2 days)
This workshop will show you how to consistently manage deadlines and changes so that your project management team can deliver successful localization projects. The workshop will be presented by Tom Connolly from ETP, a leading supplier of project management training and consulting.

Marketing On a Shoestring (1 day)
As marketing budgets tighten, a creative approach becomes ever more important. This workshop will be presented by Petra Owen of Guerrilla Marketing Group.

Tools of the Trade (1 day)
Do you feel overwhelmed by all the choices available to your company? An independent expert who knows the tools we all use will provide attendees with an unbiased overview of what is available to help your company function more efficiently.

Multilingual business: How to select your language partners (1/2 day - morning, paired with Speed Networking)
How do you go about finding and selecting the best partner? This half-day workshop will help shed some light on the imperfect art by covering partner evaluation, growing a working relationship and more.

Speed Networking (1-2 hours - afternoon, paired with How to select your language partners)
This is fun networking:  Every three minutes during the activity, a bell sounds, and participants from one side of the networking table rotate to the next seat, where the process begins all over again. Bring lots of business cards!

GALA and ELIA developed a cooperation agreement last year to take advantage of the existing synergy in the two organizations’ missions and the reciprocal interest to create quality regional events for European members. This agreement is designed to increase the associations’ coverage and enhance communications of their respective activities. The media sponsor for the series of joint networking days is MultiLingual Computing, Inc.

ELIA and GALA’s first co-produced Networking Days – An intense four days

Networking Days 4 Paris took place on 13-16 March, 2008 at the Novotel Paris Les Halle in Paris France, the first of three planned co-produced events in 2008. The event featured 5 separate one and two-day workshops covering a wide range topics oriented to help small and medium-size language service providers improve their sales and management and to take a glimpse at what it might take to expand into new markets.

Included in the program was: the always-full two-day Executive Sales Management Workshop, the brand new two-day Project Management Workshop taught by industry leaders, an overview of what it takes to do business in and with North America in a workshop titled Crossing the Atlantic, the brand new and very popular Topics in Vendor Management, and finally, the less-popular but extremely well-received A Crash Course in EN 15038.

There were 80 event attendees from a record number of countries (25), some from as far away as Argentina and the USA,  who attended one or more of the workshops offered over the four days. The mix of familiar ELIA members and new faces from GALA member companies made for an exciting opportunity for participants to expand their range of contacts. There was so much enthusiasm for this peer to peer interaction that an unprecedented and very spirited crowd took part in Friday’s Networking Cocktail – a ND tradition. An only slightly more reserved group participated in the very RED (see the ND4 photos) and entertaining Networking Dinner the following evening. At the end, the feedback from the attendees was very positive as they truly enjoyed the unique mix of industry-specific learning, networking and fun offered by Networking Days events.

ELIA and GALA wish to express special thanks to our media sponsor Multilingual Computing, Inc. and to our exhibitors Lionbridge, MultiCorpora International Inc, Plunet, SDL Trados Technologies, and The Language Technology Center Ltd.

GALA and ELIA will be holding Networking Days 5 in Ljubljana Slovenia on 3-6 July 2008 at the CITY Hotel. Most of the program has been set and we can confirm that Renato Beninatto will be presenting the Topics in Vendor Management Workshop again due to its popularity in Paris. Additional details will be announced in the coming weeks.
