Translating for the European UnionThe European Union is a major consumer of language services. However, translating for the European Union is often seen as an extremely cumbersome endeavour for small and medium sized LSPs due to the long public procurement procedures involved. The aim of the presentation is to shed light on the how and why language services are procured by the bodies of the European Union, where business opportunities can be found and how to stay informed. A more closer look to the outsourcing operation at the Directorate General for Translation (DGT) of the European Commission, with volumes and trends, the various kinds of contracts in force, contract management through quality evaluation, assistance to contractors as well as coming opportunities will complete the information needed to take informed tendering decisions in the future. |

The study is based on a comparison between German, French and Swedish SME companies. A connection has been found between multilingual skills and export performance. The objective is to provide live feedback to the presenters and education to the audience about how companies position themselves and how clients and competitors hear what they are saying. A buyer of translation services, a sales trainer, and an LSP will listen to the presentation and make suggestions for improvement and comment on the offering. The audience will also be invited to make comments and ask for advice. You could say that this is as practical as sales training can get. This mini-workshop lasts for two sessions. |

One Thousand and One Formats - Hints and Tips on the Translation of Graphic Files and PDFsMarek Gawrysiak - TextPartners There are not so many new lands to be discovered in the translation industry. This means that, in general, as translation professionals, we feel that we are in control of our projects. Nevertheless, there is always some hands-on knowledge which comes in very handy when a technically complex project presents itself. And that knowledge not only simplifies our work, but also allows us to save money. One such example is PDF files, the structure of which is hardly ever predictable. Another instance is graphic images containing text for translation. Now, some people may well say "No problem!" Fair enough. But what if the job involves a thousand such images and your client then asks for a first and maybe even a second round of changes to be made? What if you then need to write the changes into your TM? What if you need to resize images but keep the original text size? And how about handling things when purely linguistic dictates give you a target language text which is significantly longer than the source text? Does it begin to sound as if the same ground will have to be covered again and again, with every single change? Well, it shouldn't be necessary. Not even if you multiply the whole thing by several languages. If nothing else, the aim of this presentation is to share some hints and tips with you all! |
