13 and 14 March
Project Management

Industry experts will help participants understand and master the art of project management. The 2-day program is geared towards project managers, production managers and company owners. The session will cover a variety of topics related to project management.

Thursday, 13 March

With price margins already thin, and quality already a given necessity for customers, language service providers can set themselves apart through skillful project management.  This workshop will cover the key skills necessary to becoming a good project manager, from relationship management, bonding, to change management.  Presented by Andrew Draheim, VP Global Operations for thebigword. (program)

Friday, 14 March

Chris Pyne Director Partner Management Globalization Services at SAP will speak about project management in the context of partner and relationship management.  He will give insight on the important role project management plays for companies that both manage projects themselves (in house) AND outsource projects to partner suppliers.  He will speak about his expectations and experiences with recruitment, quality, QA chain, procedures and implementation as well as tools for synchronizing their processes and streamlining their projects. (program)

Leonid Glazychev, CEO of Logrus International Corporation, will challenge some pre-conceived notions about how business is done in the language industry. For example:

  • Is it possible that complete transparency might not be such a bad thing? Commonly it is thought that it is dangerous to reveal project cost breakdown to clients but it could be a way of getting more business.
  • Doing translation and localization work globally, all of us have to deal with local flavors of management, communications and behavior on a regular basis. The typical implied and widely applied approach is to promote a single, sterile PM/Communication standard using carrot and stick policy, with stick dominating. But aren't we also losing something and throwing the baby out with the bath water?
  • Plus: Rates vs. Volume: Are we in for a big surprise?

How-to Guide "Crossing the Atlantic: Selling and Buying Services on Both Sides of the Pond"

Doing business in North America or with companies from the other side of the Atlantic Ocean isn’t just for large companies. Gain insight into how to do business with the other side of the Atlantic from a few of those brave souls who have already been through the mill. Whether you want to sell to or buy your services from the other continent or if you're planning to set up a business overseas, it's the new world over there and the rules are slightly difference. Dealing with the culture, identifying the rules and regulations, finding the right people to talk with and understanding the customer can all be major challenges to overcome once you venture outside of your own territory. Speakers include Gordon Husbands of Wordbank and Denis Huré of The Licensing Agency who have all set up a business across the pond and lived to tell the tale, and Bruce Greenwood of C.A.S.E. (Council of American States in Europe) and the European office of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts will provide an expert’s opinion on how to find your way through what may seem like infinite options and choices. The day will end with a panel of your peers including the speakers, Kim Harris of text & form, Roberto Ganzerli of Arancho, and Hans Fenstermacher of Translations.com will be ready to debate on how best to overcome the challenges of doing business in a climate of a depreciating Dollar against a rising RMB and Euro. Be assured that there will be plenty of opportunity for audience questions and discussion. (program)

Topics in Vendor Management - THIS WORKSHOP IS FULL

How do you select translators? How do you assign jobs? How do you know what is the fair price? If you want to look at the trends in vendor management and how you can use this business function as a strategic tool to become more efficient and more profitable, don’t miss this session. In fact, Vendor Management is the least explored operation in translation companies. In the past year, Common Sense Advisory has been organizing sessions with large buyers and vendors of translation services and looking at technology providers. Renato Beninatto will share the findings and recommendations with the participants in this session. This workshop will cover:

  • Traditional way of looking at vendor management is outdated
  • Examples from the evolution in other industries
  • Managing vendors on performance and profitability, not only on price
  • Vendor relations in a collaborative environment
  • Tools
  • Maintenance
  • Scheduling
  • Large projects
